About Simran
Simran Frontain is a Classicist, translator, and writer. Simran grew up in America, where she played violin at a high level before deciding to pursue her true passion for literature. Simran moved to the UK to study at the prestigious University College London, where she earned her BA (Classics) and continued her studies in London's competitive intercollegiate MA program. Simran is currently a PhD student at Royal Holloway and UCL (co-supervision), writing her doctoral thesis on the sexual objectification, silencing, and slut-shaming of Clodia Metelli for male literary, social, and political gain (expected to finish spring 2028).
Simran's research interests include Latin literature, especially late republican Latin literature and Roman love poetry; women in antiquity; gender, sexuality, and sex work; Roman oratory, especially Cicero; Roman drama (and its reception); and Classical reception (particularly in fashion); Simran's research focuses primarily on ancient Roman literature, although her work has taken her more broadly into fashion theory, sociology, philosophy, and feminist studies. Simran has presented at national and international conferences, including the prestigious Imagines conference. Enthusiastic and passionate about education, Simran has taught Latin literature to undergraduates; furthermore, she has been involved in peer tutoring initiatives throughout her educational career and individually tutors students for A-level and AP exams (Latin, Classical civilisation, and English). She is currently preparing several papers and book chapters for publication (stay tuned!)
Ultimately, Simran plans to have a career as a scholar and professor of Latin literature. Her ambitions are towards a research career in Latin literature and in an ideal world, she hopes to have the privilege to pursue feminist philosophy and fashion theory as secondary research interests (having a wide-ranging career like her rolemodels Martha Nussbaum and Marjorie Garber) as well as publishing translations, teaching, and engaging with popular audiences about Classics.
Beyond academia, Simran works as a model, is passionate about disability and chronic illness advocacy, and enjoys distance running; you will find her at the library working on her thesis, in a medical waiting room (still endeavouring to do academic work while severely ill), or training for her next marathon (while continually thinking about Latin).
